The largest cost for any electrical contractor is labor,” states Ken Brooks, technical trainer for industrial technology company Trimble. “It also represents the biggest risk factor so it is crucial that labor is accurately estimated in every job to ensure profitability and the long-term health of the business. On top of this, every job is different and presents new challenges. Understanding how to customize the bid to reflect the uniqueness of each job is critical to capture what each job needs and the eventual cost to the business.”

Ken has been in the construction/contracting and technical industry all of his life, following the footsteps of his father, starting as an electrical apprentice, and eventually learning to estimate and manage material purchasing, serve as a general manager / branch manager. Now he facilitates training for Trimble’s electrical estimating customers and lends his expertise from software specific solutions to other preconstruction workflows.

By attending this session, electrical estimators are educated on best practices for utilizing labor data in estimates to ensure profitability on the job,” Ken says.

The Art of Estimating includes a deep dive on applying labor in electrical estimates, how to identify risks and account for those costs within the estimate. Estimating is always a balance between hedging risk while ensuring a competitive bid, Ken offers. In his session, he advises how to best account for conditions that may impact labor productivity, such as field conditions, project complexity, location variations, accelerated schedules, and crew variations when building estimates.

When not working, Ken enjoys serving as a college and high school sports official including football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, lacrosse, and softball.

I have officiated state championships along with many other high-level playoffs,” Ken says. “The experiences gained have helped keep my other career in perspective. Being able to teach young people sportsmanship and be a part of the competition has been amazing. I love teaching, which is why I’m so looking forward to the upcoming IEC SPARK conference.
